The South African municipal landscape is going to change after the next municipal elections in 2016 following the final decisions of the Municipal Demarcation Board on the re-determination of municipal boundaries.

“In Gauteng province, there were 3 cases for determination and all were confirmed as published 21 notices. These include the confirmation of the re-determined municipal boundaries of Randfontein and Westonaria Local Municipalities by amalgamating them into a single category B local municipality.

“The next case is that of the redetermination of municipal boundaries of Emfuleni, Midvaal Local Municipalities and Sedibeng District amalgamating them into a single A metropolitan municipality.

With the formation of metropolitan municipality, the Sedibeng District Municipality will fall away.
In addition Lesedi Local Municipality will be excluded from and be included into Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

“The effects of the boundary redeterminations in Gauteng would result in the reduction by 4 municipalities from 12 municipalities,” MDB Chairperson, Landiwe Mahlangu explained.

Addressing a contingent at the ANC Headquarters in Vereeniging, ANC Regional Chairperson Mahole Mofokeng said, “We welcome the final ruling of the Demarcation Board to merge Emfuleni and Midvaal municipalities towards a Vaal Metropolitan River City. The ruling is supported by the ANC because it will bring development and prosperity in the area of Midvaal.

The merger will benefit the poor areas in Midvaal and fast track development and housing delivery.
“The Board ruling is appreciated because the DA controlled Midvaal municipality has made communities to suffer for many services including refusing housing development, installing toilets and sanitation.

There have been many cases where the Gauteng department of local government and housing tried to intervene to fix the situation but they were denied by the Midvaal local council.

“The merger will bring a fresh start to the people who have been subjugated under maladministration and corruption in the Midvaal local municipality. There is a syndicate of DA leaders conniving with officials to confiscate land and sell it illegally. One wonders how many of those which they govern are in this situation.

“The merger will help us to combine municipalities to work better as part of the ANC 2015 vision to build a Metropolitan City region.”
