In an effort to win over Midvaal from the opposition party, the ANC (African National Congress) lobbied for support by embarking on a campaign recruiting and encouraging residents of Sicelo, Meyerton to check their eligibility to vote or register to vote in the upcoming elections.
The campaign which took place over the weekend kick-started on a high note with struggle songs sang to the excitement and ululation from community members leading them to join, this saw volunteers from the ruling party going door-to-door creating awareness to the racially stricken township.

Though ward eight is under the leadership of the ruling party despite the area being led by the opposition; many believes it’s about time they cast their vote for a better life for a change. Six former opposition party members crossed floor and were warmly received and promised to work hard and bring change in the lives of the people of Sicelo.

Xolani Zwane, Chief Mobiliser said; “The response from the community members was good as prior preparations were made in creating awareness; though I am not certain about figures as to how many people came to check their names on the votes roll but one problem encountered was of people without identity documents, therefore would like them to heed the call of applying for such documents as these are required for services offered by the government including casting their votes which is a right of every citizen of this country.

We understand that for one to get a job at the opposition led municipality a membership is a requirement, there are so many challenges facing us namely unemployment, drugs and crime that is escalating. Sicelo has seen no development whatsoever but in town it’s a different matter altogether and we are saying complaining won’t help but voting for a right party will; concluded ANC-volunteer Themba Motloung.
